Clear networking basics make it easier to interpret an address check without overstating what it reveals. These guides explain common concepts and the limits of IP-based information.
Understand IP addresses
Learn how public and private addresses, IPv4 and IPv6, and changing provider assignments fit together in the IP address guide.
Understand VPNs
See how encrypted tunnels change the route and visible exit address, and why a VPN is not a guarantee of anonymity, in the VPN and privacy guide.
Use the tools carefully
Explore the IP and privacy tools, including the public IP check, address lookup, local browser signals, approximate map, and downloadable report.
Common questions
Can an IP address identify me?
An IP address can provide clues about a network or provider, but it does not by itself identify a person. Other information and lawful provider records may be required to associate network activity with an account or subscriber.
Is the location on the map exact?
No. It is an estimate tied to network registration data and can be offset from the person using the connection.
Why does localhost show a different address?
When the site and browser run on the same machine, WordPress may only see the local connection. This site checks the XAMPP server’s public egress address, which can differ from the browser’s VPN or proxy route.
Does this site test VPN leaks?
No. It shows the public address observed by the server and a small set of browser settings. It does not probe WebRTC or DNS resolver traffic.
